Augmented Reality Marketing in 2021

Augmented Reality (AR)

As a new form of interactive technology, augmented reality (AR) has emerged as a way of complimenting virtual annotations with the physical environment, offering innovative means for marketers to engage consumers with commercially-relevant content.

Though still relatively new in adoption, AR is poised to enter the mainstream and become widely adopted and accessible to the public, with one estimate of spending on AR technology hitting $60 billion in 2020.

Augmented Reality Marketing

At its core, the power of augmented reality marketing extends from the way humans process information. While we are surrounded by a three-dimensional physical world, most data we view is trapped on 2D screens. Humans use all five sensors to process information, but at different rates. AR technology enhances the interaction between consumers and digital applications, providing an experience-focused interaction in two ways; (1) allowing users to physically embed virtual products into their own environment in real-time, and (2) simulating physical control over the product, and marketers have realized it is a method worth investing in.

1) Improved Services Online

With the progress seen recently in Augmented Reality development, brands are discovering new ways of incorporating AR into their workflow. VisionAR states the top five AR trends in 2020 are; AR shopping, business in-house application, AR vehicles, customer support and AR indoor navigation.

People are already buying products from social media with the evolution of technology, but with the help of AR, the experience can be much more attractive. This allows the user to purchase the products without having to travel to a store, as he is able to enter a virtual store, where he can try the products and buy them online. Walmart is one such classic example which has developed its own VR store.

2) Improved Brand Experience

One of the biggest examples of AR in marketing experiences is from Pepsi. As people waited at a London bus stop, they were introduced to a world of UFOs and robots – all seemingly in their reality. Pepsi applied AR technology to the bus shelter and commuters were astonished when it seemed as though flying saucers and wild tigers were coming for them.

While immersed in our studies, we learned of Augmented Reality (AR) technology by completing an extra credit module in Immersive Technology at Technological University Dublin. AR introduced us to new forms of interactive technology that although is widely available, it is not yet widely adopted. After completing valuable research on the technologies efficiency in marketing, we realized its potential to revolutionize the marketing industry, as-well-as its potential for mass adoption. From there, we gained experience working with AR in Ireland and Internationally by collaborated directly with Augmented Reality brands. Recently, we began developing AR applications to be used for marketing activities which we are excited to showcase early next year!

Nescafe has launched an Augmented Reality app for Android and the iPhone in Chile.
